Special Interests

FWC welcomes members to participate in a variety of interest groups. If you want more information about an interest group, please email the FWC Sections Administrator at FWC.InterestSections@umich.edu and your name will be forwarded to the section leader(s) listed below. Contact information for section leaders also is available in the FWC directory.

Special Interests Coordinator: Diane Conde

Around the World
This section meets at 7:15 p.m. on the 3rd Monday of the month at Glacier Hills. There is no meeting in December. Spouses and guests are encouraged to attend. Members or guests show slides or make digital presentations and discuss their travels.
Update: Plans are undecided at this time.
Leader: Kathryn Benford

Campus Explorers
Meetings are at different University locations. Docents, faculty or other knowledgeable guides conduct tours. All FWC members are welcome, especially newcomers. We usually meet at 10 a.m. on the last Wednesday in September, October, January and then March and April.
Update: We will not be meeting in Fall 2020, as visits to indoor campus locations are not feasible at this time.
Leader: Jean Gosling

Cinema
The cinema group is not a serious movie group; we mostly enjoy each other’s company. We usually eat before the movie, which makes serious discussion of the movie we have seen impossible. However, the movie group is a great way to get to see movies with old and new friends. We see movies at the Michigan and State Theaters on the 1st Monday of the month. Two weeks later, we meet again for movie night on Tuesday (free for some group members) at the same theaters. Members pays for their own meals and tickets.
Update: Due to COVID-19, we will not be seeing movies as a group, but will maintain a list of members who want to see movies with each other. In lieu of movies, we’ll just have our pre-movie discussion with less noise – over Zoom. We are assessing how often we’ll meet online. We expect we will meet less frequently, perhaps just the first Monday of the month.
Leader: Lisa Neidert

Friends From Around the World
We are women from all over the world who get together monthly from September to May for an activity and to socialize. We share our American and international traditions with one another. If you are new to town, we will help you get acclimated to the University and Ann Arbor. Section dues are $10 per person per year.
Update: We think our members enjoy best the socializing with each other. That is why we decided that it would be difficult to “Zoom” with our members and are going on hiatus. If things improve with the pandemic, we can resume our meetings in the winter/spring.
Leaders:  Karen Stern and Margaret McClamroch

FWC Goes Out to Dinner
Our purpose is to share good company and good food. All FWC members are welcome at any time. This section (formerly Dinner after Work) has been an enjoyable way for women from many disciplines to share their experiences and interests. We meet twice a month—the first dinner is at 5:00 p.m. and the second dinner is at 6:30 p.m.—at various area restaurants. One of the dinners is on a Wednesday and the other is on a Thursday. At each dinner the attendees plan the date and location of the following month’s dinner.
Update: We’ve been meeting every two weeks instead of twice a month. If Zoom fatigue sets in we’ll change to once a month.
Leaders: Amy Barnett and Marcy Breslow

FWC Goes to Happy Hour
This group meets a couple of times each semester to sample various happy hours around the Ann Arbor area. We get together for an hour or so to chat and have something to drink or eat. It’s an enjoyable way to get to know new people, new places, and stay connected with FWC women. We meet at 5:00 p.m. on a weekday, usually the 3rd Tuesday or Thursday. Dates and details for happy hours are announced by email and group members respond if they are coming.
Update: We will be meeting only on Zoom until further notice. Bring a refreshment–your choice.
Leaders: Judy Compton and Karen Vigmostad

Music
Members perform solo and ensemble music. All instruments including voice, are welcome. New members at all levels of achievement are warmly supported; it is a perfect setting to go back to an instrument you have not practiced for some time. We meet in members’ homes on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m.
Update: We will be meeting on Zoom until further notice.
Leaders: Terry Meerkov and Lynne Waggoner
