Afternoon Meetings

Books and Authors: We read a variety of books, mostly contemporary fiction with occasional nonfiction, that represent the literary tastes and broad interests of our members. For our book selection, which is done every year in May, titles are pitched by section participants and voted on by the group. At our monthly meetings, a member introduces the author, lightly reviews the book, and leads discussion. We meet in members’ homes or at a local library branch, September to June, generally on the 4th Monday of the month, at 1:30 p.m. Leader: Judy Compton.

Books, Etc.: Our group meets at 1:00 p.m. on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from September to June. A member is responsible for leading the discussion and may choose to host in their home or meet in a room at the library. In June, books are chosen for the following year from member recommendations and include both fiction and nonfiction.  New members are welcome. Leader: Christine Gilman.

Monday Afternoon Book Review: We are a review book group. Each month a member volunteers to review a book (or an author or poet) of her or his choosing. Following the presentation, the group engages in some very entertaining discussions.  We meet on the 1st Monday of the month from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m., August through June. We generally meet at the Malletts Creek Branch of the Ann Arbor District Library; for the winter months and depending upon the weather, we might meet via Zoom. Leader: Donna Satin.

Mystery Book Club: Miss Scarlett requests your presence in the Billiards Room, with the knife, or was it the croquet mallet? We read two books per month and we have a theme for each year. This past year was “Cities.” Each month, we read two mysteries set in the “city of the month.”  We had such a great time, we will likely repeat “Cities” with different cities, of course.  Our book choices and our discussions are really fun.  Come join us. This group meets on the 3rd Wednesday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. We meet year-round, but during the summer months, we only read “cozy mysteries.”  We meet at the Pittsfield Branch, Muskrat Room, of the Ann Arbor District Library, unless it is Dark & Stormy & Dreary, then we meet via Zoom. Leader: Donna Satin.

Evening Meetings

Contemporaries Meet Classics: Members review and lead lively discussions of current and classic books. We meet the 1st Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in members’ homes or on Zoom in the winter months, from September to June. The season ends with a potluck dinner. Evening Enrichment: Our group selects a theme for each year’s reading. In 2025-2026 our theme will be “Biographies of Women.”  A reviewer provides background and guides the discussion. We meet on 2nd Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m., September thru June. Meetings are held at members’ homes and over Zoom in January and February.  In December and June, we have a potluck dinner and sometimes watch a movie related to the year’s theme. This group currently is closed to new members. Leaders: Sandy Simon and Susan Washabaugh.

Newcomers+ Book Group: Newcomers and current members are welcome. We are a theme-based book group and our 2025-26 theme is “The Art World.” We read both fiction and non-fiction and have group discussions where all can contribute. We meet on 2nd Wednesdays of the month at 7:00 p.m. (except December when we enjoy dinner together) from September to June. We meet in members’ homes,or via Zoom in winter months in bad weather.
