A variety of current novels and classics make our discussions lively. Meeting in members’ homes adds a warm touch to our group. Our potluck at the last meeting is always a highlight. New members are always welcome. We meet on the 3rd Monday from 3 to 5 p.m. from September to May (except December). Leader: Daryl Hafter.
Books and Authors
Selections include mostly contemporary fiction with occasional non-fiction. One or two members give the author’s biography and review the book, followed by general discussion. Every May we pick selections for the following year. We meet in members’ homes September to June on the 4th Monday at 7:30 p.m. (usually earlier in the month in June). Leader: Catherine Allen.
Selections include paperback contemporary fiction and nonfiction as well as classic literature. Group members read the book selected for the month, one member reviews it and leads the discussion. We pick selections for the next year in May. We meet in members’ homes at 1:30 p.m. on the 3rd Wednesday from September to May (except December). New members are welcome. Leader: Mary Stevens.
Contemporaries Meet Classics Book Discussion
Members review and lead informal discussions of current and classic books. Diverse ages and backgrounds make discussions lively. We meet the 1st Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. in members’ homes, from September to June. The season ends with a potluck dinner. Leaders: Sandy Anderson and Carolyn Tyson.
Each year our group focuses on a particular theme, which for 2018-2019 will be Books About Canada by Canadian authors. Members provide background and lead a discussion. In addition to book discussions, each year we enjoy two “Dinner and Movie” nights when we gather at a member’s home, have a potluck dinner and watch a movie (related to the theme) together. We meet the 2nd Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. from September to June. Leaders: Betty-Ann Gilliland and Sandy Simon.
Monday Afternoon Book Discussion
This section meets in members’ homes, where a single member reviews a book not usually read by others. At the first meeting of the year, each member mentions one or more books read during the summer, from which a group book list is assembled. In recent years, our June meeting is a restaurant lunch where books are exchanged and summer reading lists offered. There is no required reading for membership. We meet on the 1st Monday at 1:00 p.m., October to June, except January. Leader: Elaine Sneideman.
Newcomers+ Book Group
Newcomers and current members are welcome. We are a theme-based book group; the theme is decided on by members and changes each year. We read both fiction and non-fiction and have group discussions where all can contribute. We meet in our homes except for the last meeting where we have a daytime lunch meeting to discuss a book and choose the next year’s topic. Past themes have been immigrant stories, food memoirs, and travel; for 2018-2019 the theme is Strong and Outrageous Women. We meet from September to May (except December) the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. Leaders: Amy Barnett and Judy Compton.
